In ancient Athens, Greece Athena was the goddess of reason, wisdom, the arts and all intelligent pursuits. She was the deity to whom some of the greatest thinkers of all time pledged their allegiance.
In modern-day Athens, Georgia Athena has once again inspired a great work of art, the Athena Berliner Weisse by Creature Comforts Brewing Company.
The golden can glows in the noonday sun and I can practically hear the inspiration (in the form of a lip-smacking, gently sour beer) calling out to me from its aluminum enclosure. After popping the top, a lightly tart and highly thirst-quenching example of the style meets my lips and opens my eyes to another realm of beer-themed thought.
The brewers at Creature Comforts definitely channel their ancient Athenian brethren when it comes to Athena (the beer) as the versatility of its recipe and its general mildness inspire numerous other variants of the brew. Two major ones are: Athena Paradiso (brewed with Pineapple and Coconut) and Athena dry-hopped with Galaxy hops.
Comfortable amidst the Parthenon's Doric columns or under the famed arches at the University of Georgia, this Athena definitely inspires me… to have one more.
