Brewing great beer is equal parts hard science and thoughtful artistry. Taking inspiration from this concept, local artists Madeline Bates and Jen Holt have created a collaborative installation of photographic prints that blur the line between scientific documentation and organic artistic interpretation of the world.
For this installation, the artists use their traditional photographic methods (silver photograms and cyanotypes) to draw attention to the nature-made foundations of brewing beer. Each artist created one-of-a-kind prints that illustrate the four basic ingredients in all beer: water, malted grain, hops, and yeast. Jen Holt uses an enlarger in her silver photogram process that enables her to capture microscopic close-ups of yeast and hop flowers. Madeline Bates uses the cyanotype process– a kind of print made with exposure to the sun– to render the changes that water and grain undergo throughout the brewing process.
This show highlights Creature Comforts' third anniversary while continuing our annual commitment to feature environmental artwork in honor of Earth Day (4/22).
