Susan Pelham’s collages combine her love of Magic Realism and Art History. Along with literary sources, she often uses famous paintings in the art historical canon as inspiration for her work. The resulting works of art are surreal constructions of quasi-familiar worlds that stoke the imagination and encourage a sense of humor in looking at art.
Pelham's collage series is a recent endeavor, begun in 2009, in an artistic career spanning more than fifty years. In 1963, Pelham earned a degree in Fine Arts from Florida State University where studied both Painting and Art History. She later studied Art History at Sotheby’s in London.
A single collage can take fifty or more hours to assemble. This does not include the countless hours Pelham spends collecting and sorting the paper samples that go into the collages. All flesh portions in the collages are painted, achieving a satisfying trick-of-the-eye effect next to the flat strips of paper.
Pelham lives in Monroe, Georgia where she teaches painting and works in her studio. She is also a popular lecturer on the fine art of collage.
All works of art on view in the brewery are for sale. For inquiries, please contact the artist at firstname.lastname@example.org.
