Cinema Under the Influence: Network 40th Anniversary Screening

Join us at the 40 Watt Club this Friday, April 8th, for a special screening of Network hosted by Cinema Under the Influence! The program starts at 7:30 with a Skype introduction with New York Times' Dave Itzkoff, author of the book MAD AS HELL: THE MAKING OF NETWORK AND THE FATEFUL VISION OF THE ANGRIEST MAN IN MOVIES.

Then comes NETWORK. Directed by prolific filmmaker Sidney Lumet and written by cutting satirist Paddy Chayefsky, Network arrived in theaters in 1976, when the American media began a turn toward sensationalism and ratings grabs that continue to this day. While television is its focus (four years before CNN's creation of the 24 hour news cycle), the film applies just as readily to our world of the Internet and mobile devices. Add to the mix revelatory performances and Academy Awards for Peter Finch (Best Actor), Faye Dunaway (Best Actress), Beatrice Straight (Best Supporting Actress), and Chayefsky, and you have a masterwork begging to be celebrated on its 40th birthday.

After a brief intermission, Athens favorites Oak House will take the stage, leading up to PUJOL--the brainchild of Nashville's Daniel Pujol--performing their trademark mix of avant-garage and media critique.

Tickets are $12 at the door, but advanced tickets are available for $10. Get them at the link below!
