CCBC Gallery Featured Artist: Jourdan Joly
Tuesday, August 8–Sunday, September 3
Jourdan Joly’s ice cream cones look good enough to eat, but don’t be fooled: they’re actually made of cast resin! Joly was one of the CCBC Gallery’s first featured artists, exhibiting several of his nautical rope sculptures at the brewery in early 2015 while completing his master’s degree in sculpture at the University of Georgia. Joly has since moved back to his native Florida, returning to Athens just to share this special end-of-summer treat of an exhibition.
Joly works with anything he can get his hands on: wood, scrap metal, rope, recyclable bits and bobs, and so on. He sees the world as full of opportunities for composition and recomposition. The artist’s work tends to highlight a playful back-and-forth between the process and the product, the parts and the whole. Joly has recently focused on developing his cast resin ice cream cones, a delightfully deceptive series that represents the illusory nature of the artist’s body of work.
Joly’s ice cream cones were recently featured in the issue #33 of Uppercase Magazine (April/May/June 2017) as well as on Create! Magazine’s blog (July 2, 2017). Joly collaborated with the art group MILAGROS Collective for an installation in Ephemera Obscura, an exhibition on view at New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center through October 1, 2017.

Join us Sunday, September 3 for an event celebrating the closing of Joly’s show and the winding down of summer: the Summer’s End Scoop Fest! We will host the artist at the brewery for meet and greet with customers, casting demos, and more fun art activities. We’ll also have real ice cream available from a surprise vendor. Stay tuned for more details!
