The Takeaway -
Another beer in our Before the Wood series, this English Barleywine is currently resting in bourbon barrels and was brewed in March of 2017. The base has now developed some pleasant oxidation and is ready to serve. This beer was brewed with all English malts, hops, and yeast and went through an extended boil.
Before the Wood highlights small snippets of beers that mainly rest in oak barrels, so consumers can see what the wood aging imparts and, so they know what to look forward to. The barrel aged (and main release for this beer) is likely still a year away.
Fig, plum, toffee, caramel, chocolate, raisin, tobacco, and leather dominate this classic English barleywine from start to finish. It’s a nice sipper for the colder months.
